What is a generic induction?
A Generic Induction is a safety based course which provides and introduction/overview of the mining industry. A Coal Surface course takes 2 days to complete. It covers 7 topic areas such as risk assessment, tagging and isolation and includes basic first aid and fire fighting. A Combined Coal Surface and Underground course covers these areas as well as underground topics such as ventilation and strata control.
Do I need to do a Generic Induction?
If you are going to work on a mine site you will need a generic induction. If you are just thinking of trying to get a job on a mine site and looking to prepare yourself as much as possible, you should think about doing a generic induction.
What about the Coal Board Medical?
The coal board medical is something that you need to have if you are working on a mine site. The medical is valid for 5 years. All mine sites and some contractors have their own Nominated Medical Advisor (NMA). You should ask when you are applying for a job about the coal board medical.
Some contractors prefer that you already have this done before you apply.
How do I find out about applying for a job?
CHSS can give you a list of contractors in the CQ area and we are happy to answer questions. If we don't know we'll try to find for you, but ultimately it's your persistence that pays off!! Is there anything else?
Yes, accommodation is a big issue that you should be aware of and take into account when you are thinking of trying to gain employment in the mining industry. Many of the mining towns simply do not have sufficient accommodation available for the mining company workers and all the contractors. When you are ringing around or speaking to people about jobs you need to ask them about accommodation and whether or not it is available.
